Who God Is

Who God Is

I never used to be like this– concerned (aka anxious) about the affairs of the world; angry at governmental leaders and other decision-makers and influencers who are making terrible or even evil decisions; wishing family members of mine were tucked in safely at home rather than flying across the world to serve folks in need of both worldly and spiritual help.

But it’s a struggle for me nowadays.

And figuring out how to navigate my body and soul in this “new normal” is a priority– not only for my sake but for the sake of my loved ones as well.

I saw a big framed map of the world at a home goods store the other day and I think I am going to go back there and purchase it and hang it on one of my empty walls with this set of verses written over the top:

“God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne…the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted… For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.”

~ Psalm  47:8-9, 48:14 ~

This encourages me in so many ways. First of all, it motivates me to PRAY to the God who knows all and reigns over it all. Secondly, it reminds me to FOCUS on who God truly is–to meditate, if you will, on that truth– as a way of helping my mental state during this particular season of challenge.

So let’s do that together for a few moments. Let’s search the Scriptures and remind ourselves of who God really is. I’m just going to open up my Bible and start listing descriptions of Him:

– The Mighty One

– God of justice

– Perfect in beauty

– Greatly exalted

– Awesome

– The Great King over all the earth

– The Lord Most High

– My help

– The One who sustains me

– Good

– Enthroned from of old

– Does not change

– God is for me

– My strength

– My rock

– My fortress

– My deliverer

– My shield

– The horn of my salvation

– My stronghold

– Worthy of praise

– My support

– He rescued me

– He delighted in me

– Faithful

– Blameless

– Shrewd

– He shows unfailing love to his anointed

– His way is perfect

– His word is flawless

– He shields all who take refuge in him

– He avenges me

– He arms me with strength

– He keeps my way secure

– He causes me to stand

– He has a perfect law, trustworthy statutes, right precepts, radiant commands

– My Shepherd

– He leads me

– He refreshes my soul

– He guides me

– He is with me

– He comforts me

– King of Glory

– My light

Well, that’s a good start! Gracious. And I found all of that just in the Psalms! Psalm 18, 19, 23, 24, 27, 47, 50, 54, 55 and 56 to be exact!

I encourage you to search the Scriptures too. Who does God reveal Himself to be when you dig in there? Explore, examine, and pray. Ask God to speak to you and to feed you His truth and hope. Thank Him for who He is. Depend on Him. And please share what you find with me too!

* * *

I love you and am praying you, too, will be encouraged by meditating on God and who He really is. Just as the author of Hebrew wrote so many years ago, let’s me and you “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)
